Relocation - How To Go About It

When relocating, there are certain ways you have to go about it. Unless you have no choice, you must arrange relocation during the 'off peak' times. This is when the demand on the relocation services - vis-a-vis their moving equipment, vans, etc is not high. Arrange to relocate when it is convenient to you and your family.

For families with children, the best time is at the end of the school term, and as this, unfortunately, is the 'peak' season for relocation services, the costs will be high. Relocation during mid term may not be a problem if you have younger children, but in case of older children, it may not be a good move.

Things To Do
There are certain things you need to do to facilitate relocation:

  • Arrange to meet a couple of relocation service providers.
  • Let them provide you with binding, as well as non-binding estimates.
  • Their estimates will depend on what you are taking with you, and will include transportation, and other charges for additional services, if any. The cost will depend on what you are taking, and with fewer items, the cost will change.
  • If you decide to do your own packing, arrange to have it done in time, before the moving day.
  • If you have antiques to be moved, have them appraised, and have a written appraisal.
  • If your company is relocating you, check what portion of the relocation expenses will they be paying.

Use the services of an auto relocation company to move your car to your new location. This saves you the hassle of driving your own car down.

Some of the other things you need to do are:

  • Notify your post office and provide them with the forwarding address.
  • Arrange with your phone company to use a forwarding message informing about your new number.
  • Notify your new utility companies so that services are turned on as soon as you move in.
